Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, is located halfway between Chongqing and the coast. Bridegs across both Yangzi and Han rivers connect Wuhan's three cities of Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang, which have a total population of 7 million people. Of the three cities, Hankou is the best known, and has been treaty port since the 1800s. Wuchang is the oldest (founded in 100 AD). Hanyang is the industral center and the smallest. The location of Wuhan makes it the hub of transportation in central China. Wuhan is also famous for its extreme summer temperatures (>40°C). It is one the the three "furnaces" of China, along with Chongqing and Nanjing.
