2008 May. 12 Sichuan Earthquake

At14:28 local time, a major earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale (7.9 according to USGS) struck Sichuan Province in southwest China. The epicenter was located 19 km (11.8 miles) underground in Wenchuan County. The quake was felt in most parts of China, as well as Thailand, Bangladesh and Vietnam. This is the biggest earthquake in the area in 32 years. Many lives were lost and many homes have been destroyed. People in the affected areas are struggling to survive. Since many affected areas are deep in the mountains, blocked roads, bad weather and frequent aftershocks have made rescue operation very challenging and dangerous. Up till the 20th, there are thousands of aftershocks, many above 5, 4 of them above 6.
